One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead handling more material or additional to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
