Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
