RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
